(35:00 min)
Today would be my first Saturday training for Team Diabetes, and if I still lived in the Valley, I would have been out there with the crew pretty early. As I am living up on the Rim, 100 miles away, I am in my own training accord.
So this meant I had the luxury of not setting an alarm clock this morning.
Yet someone had a different idea, as I was awakened at 6:30am by thunder and rain. Fortunately, this is one of those Arizona ephemeral rains, where it pounds hard for a while, and in an hour, the sun was out.
I was still slow getting started, made coffee, read some of my new book.
My blood sugar was low this morning, and I likely took a bit much juice to raise it, as by the time I left to run, my blood sugar was 212 mg/dl. I set my insulin pump for a 0.9 unit/hour temp basal, which is about half, and at the end of my run, my level was 186. This is mostly good– sure I want my levels below 150, but I dont want them dropping a lot when I run. If I started and my level was a good 100, then I would have been in trouble.
Do the run was a slow out and back on Fossil Creek Road, with my pace maintained by Nike+ on the iPod (she tells me the halffway point, so I know where to turn about). This was just a shade more than the weekly 30 minute runs, but that will change as the training by Coach Dave does its stair step routine over the next 20 weeks.
The 11:00 minute/mile pace was slow, but I am not worrying yet on time (yet), I just want to get out there and cover the distance.
One step at a time.
Oh, for those who might care, I am trying a new thing on the blog- posting updates to my twitter account. Not that I want to blast my training schedule, but it will come into play when I step up my fund raising campaign (though if you are ready, head to my sponsor form, thanks!). For the techies out there, I am attempting to insert a #running hashtag in my tweets, so I can then try aggregating them via a twitter search at http://search.twitter.com/search?tag=running&from=cogdog (which, until I publish, should be empty).
One week of training done, 20 some to go. I’m on my way.
Did you know... "Among adults with diagnosed diabetes, 16% take insulin only, 12% take both insulin and oral medication, 57% take oral medication only, and 15% do not take either insulin or oral medications." (from ADA The Dangerous Toll of Diabetes)
