Every since crossing the marathon finish line back in January 2008 I’ve been consistent mainly in putting off running, with a litany of excuses, and not really doing much since then (life got in the way too, not a valid excuse either).
But I’ve signed up again to run with Team Diabetes, and although I will miss most of the training since I now live 100 miles outside of the valley (nice cool weather up here on the Rim).
And while I still quote my blog in terms of “I Hate Running” I know it is the only thing I have done that got my diabetes in good order (My A1Cs pegged high last year and are gradually getting better, 8.2 in January, 7.8 in April, and 7.2 this month). I am running now for everyone affected by diabetes and also myself.
So today was getting back to the training schedule, while the folks were up early down in Phoenix, I slept in a bit, but got out for my 30 minutes out and back on Fossil Creek Road, just about the only flat stretch of road anywhere near Strawberry… if you don’t go more than 3 miles in one direction.
I am still finding myself way short on energy, and going really slow, trying to keep in mind I’ve put on some mileage and weight since the last training.
And this also means the fundraising season is open! I need to raise at least $1000 but set a goal of $1500. You can support my effort via my sponsorship web form or going directly to my sponsor page on the Team D site at http://main.diabetes.org/goto/cogdog.
And my main goal is just to have a good, regular 4 months of training and then to complete the half marathon feeling good; the time is not my goal, getting in shape and doing what I can to help others out this year is what;s important.
Did you know... "Jackie Robinson, baseball star who broke the color barrier in the Major Leagues was diabetic" (from Diabetes Health Magazine)
