First Pain Free Run in Who Knows How Long

The amount of exercise I’ve done in the last few months is comparable to the flow of a desert Arizona creek in July. I’m not losing any weight or doing much for my health sitting in the office chair. Twice recently I’ve done some short bike rides, w/o any problem. And in the last week, I’ve cautiously noticed a lack of any noticeable stiffness or tenderness in the left leg.

So today was test day to try a run. Just a simple 20 minutes out, 20 some back. I did pre-ice, walking to warm, pre-stretches, and glory be! I ran without any pain at all! It was slow and plodding, but I am smiling.

Now what? I’m thinking fo going slowly, and spreading activity across more biking, maybe some swimming too. Maybe a 5k in the summer.

And a shoutout to me niece Katie, who did a 22:036 5k to qualify for a meet. Go, girl. go!

  1. great news! but DON’T be overconfident. if this is due to some mechanical aspect of the way you run then the problem is still there… just lurking in the background until you put on enough miles/speed to aggrivate it again.

i’ve been be-bopping about on the runner’s world forums due to my own injury issues and there is a very informative resource there dealing with shin splints. it’s worth the time to go through it all if for no other reason than to see you aren’t alone fighting this particular irritating problem.

all that said, i’m really happy to read this post today. keep it slow but keep it going.

I too love my orthodics and I hate running. I assume you’ve heard a million cures, but something the CSU ski coach used to do to train for shin splints was to have people walk around 100 feet? 100 yards?, I don’t remember. But anyway, walk some ways as a warm up, backwards, on your heels with your toes in the air. I’ve never had shin splints, but people who have claim this was magical and haven’t had them since.

  3. I thought this mught help inspire you.
